In an effort to educate our users about the variety of terms heard within the cannabis industry we've created a glossary organized by category with potential accompanying articles by Leafly, or other cannabis industry resources. 


Regulation/Legal

Access Point (Medical Dispensary)- In medical regulation locations this refers to the authorized locations to sell medical cannabis, as well as provide education and advice on medical cannabis. All regulations will vary based on location so it’s advised to contact the medical cannabis control board of your area for the exact locations and services available.


Adult Use - The term used to describe recreational cannabis regulations for 21+ consumers. (See also Recreational)


Cannabis Cooperative (Co-op) - Refers to a group of medical cannabis patients and/or caregivers that gather to obtain legal access to cannabis in a single location. Regulations around these vary based on location so it’s advised to reach out to the medical cannabis control board for your area for the exact locations and services available.


Caregiver - A term used to describe a person that is authorized to provide assistance to a medical cannabis patient under regulations for that location. All regulations will vary based on location so it’s advised to contact the medical cannabis control board of your area for additional information on requirements or limitations and any additional services available.


Dispensary - A general term used to refer to any location where a patient or consumer can legitimately and safely access cannabis, whether the business is technically an access point, pick-up location. co-op, collective or any other version of a legal cannabis distributor.


Extraction Artist - In the cannabis industry this refers to a licensed individual who is trained in a variety of extraction techniques such as butane, CO2, alcohol, etc. (See also Science & Technology)


Licensed facility - Refers to a dispensary, collective, etc where the business is fully licensed and compliant with the regulations in place for its location


Medical - The term used to describe cannabis regulations specific to patients with qualifying conditions that have applied to their local medical program in addition to the type of dispensary that only services patients with this state/country required medical recommendation.


Marijuana Infused Products (MIP) - Refers to non-smokable products that have been infused with the beneficial aspects of cannabis such as edibles, tinctures and topicals. (See also Methods of Consumption or Use)


Recreational - The term used to describe recreational cannabis regulations for 21+ consumers. (See also Adult Use)


Seed-to-Sale Concentrate - Refers to concentrates from a single source company that grows its own flower from seed for processing. (See also Methods of Consumption or Use: concentrates, flower)
